CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Abby’s gaze didn’t waver, but her lips twitched.

“So are you.”

Twin dimples teased to life by her smile twisted his insides into a heavy knot. A fantasy of dipping his tongue into those tiny craters danced across his mind.

You are not helping yourself, pal. Brother, remember? Just brother.

“We’re both wet.”

And that earth-shattering revelation is important because...?

“What are you doing here?” Like a safety net, her question reeled him back to reality.

“I’ve been looking for you.”

“Why?”

It seems I’ve been looking for you all my life.

He wasn’t sure they both were ready for the answer, so Alex replied with a question, “Why were you going in the water?”

“Maybe I wanted to swim.”

“Swim, huh? A bit cold for that, but if you’re up to some skinny-dipping, I’m game.”

Moron.

Well, if she considered him a brother, he’d oblige by acting brotherly.

Abby cocked her head, squinting at him like a curious cat.

“What’s a skinny-dipping?”

A bark of laughter broke free despite his current mood.

“How long have you been living in the twenty-first century, Princess?”

“You know very well how long, and I hate when you’re calling me that. I have a name.”

“So, Abigail Suzanne Coleman, after more than a year living here, you still don’t recognize popular slang?”

“So, Alexander Zachariah Morris, what of it?”

“Just boggles the mind, that’s all.”

“Your mind, my dear sir, is too easily boggled then,” She retorted in that haughty tone of voice that drove him crazy.

For some ridiculous reason this usual banter settled him like nothing else, and got his humor back on track.

“Oh, Abby.” He looped his arm in a familiar manner around her shoulder. “You’ll be the end of me.”

She surprised him by curling her arm around his waist.

“I promise to be gentle.” Her humorous oath accompanied by dancing devils in her eyes was like a balm to his soul. Or a knife to his gut. God, he had missed her.

The camaraderie between them was more precious than anything, and he’d be damned if he let his libido ruin that. If a big brother role was all she was willing to accept from him, he’d take it. Even if it killed him. Which it probably would.

And who are you kidding, pal?

Alex shrugged that thought aside, and grinned into her smiling eyes.

“Let’s go home, Abby. It’s time to face the music.”

By the time Eli managed to find his new garments and deal with them, he worked up a lather.

Abby was here.

The girl he raised from the time she was in a short dress, was here. At last, he will be able to talk to her, to air their differences.

To beg for her forgiveness.

Instead of a mere fourteen days, an eternity has stretched in between the last time he’d seen his baby sister and today. Fourteen days in 1909 equaled fourteen months in this century.

Thunderation.

So hard to wrap his mind around it. But days or months, one thing was clear to Eli: everything changed. Including Abigail’s appearance. A short glimpse before she ran out of the room was that of a stunning beauty he barely recognized.
